IRELAND’S RHYS MCCLENAGHAN and Éamon Montgomery have both earned final spots at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb.

McClenaghan will compete in the final of the men’s pommel horse after scoring an impressive 14.4000 in today’s qualifying session. That left the Olympic champion in fifth place, with the top eight going through to the final.

McClenaghan previously missed out on a medal at the Commonwealth Games after finishing in sixth place in the final, and is chasing a fourth European title this week.

Belfast’s Montgomery also advances to his first European final of the men’s floor exercise after securing sixth place in qualifying with a score of 14.033.

Both gymnasts will compete on Friday 21 August at 5pm Irish time.

The qualification round also marked European senior debuts for James Hickey and Oisin O’Connell and a return to the international stage for Adam Steele and Daniel Fox. 

Team Ireland has completed their competition with a score of 226.496 to finish in 21st place.
